A Time for the Beach
A wide running space, clean water to splash around in, and sand to dig—it’s a doggie paradise! This is probably the most obvious choice when looking for a summer trip. Just like any other activity, there are some things you need to be cautious about before bringing your dog to the beach:
- Be mindful of saltwater: Swallowing too much saltwater can be harmful to your dog. Avoid this by staying in shallow areas and limiting time spent in the water.
- Avoid interaction with sea creatures: There may be washed-up sea creatures that your dog might get curious about. It’s important to always pay attention to what they interact with, as it could be harmful.
- Avoid long sun exposure: This applies to all types of activities. The heat on the beach can be intense since there’s little shade. Too much sun exposure may lead to sunburn or, worse, heat stroke.
- Don’t walk on hot sand: The sand collects heat during peak hours. Your dog’s paws are sensitive, and they may burn from extreme heat. If the sand is too hot for you, it’s also too hot for them.
- Wash with clean water: Always rinse off after splashing around or playing in the sand to remove microorganisms, like worms, that could infect your dog.
Socialize at Dog Parks
Exposing your dog to other dogs is important. An unsocialized dog may develop anxieties and aggression, which can lead to bigger problems. However, socializing isn’t as simple as just making two dogs meet and greet. Here are some tips to set your dog up for success:
- Start early: The best time to start socializing is while they are puppies. Like kids, puppies are innocent and eager to play. Socializing them early will help them become confident around other dogs.
- Take it slow: Being around other dogs can be overwhelming, especially in a busy dog park. Don’t rush the process. Keep some distance and observe how your dog behaves. Ensure your dog is relaxed before allowing interaction with other dogs.
- Introduce a familiar dog: Dogs in the park can be unpredictable. If you’re unsure how your dog will react in public, start by introducing them to a family or friend’s dog with a known temperament. This way, you can be more proactive in predicting what might happen next.
- Seek a professional trainer: Let’s face it—your dog might have matured without proper socialization and now may have developed behavioral problems. In such cases, professional trainers can help, and this season is the perfect time to start
